Thousands of people in the U.S. are waiting years for kidney transplants, and many die before one becomes available, even though usable organs are often discarded. A new national initiative aims to change that by encouraging transplant centers to use more donated kidneys, expand living donation, and improve patient care. At Michigan Medicine, the effort is also focused on making transplants more accessible and better coordinated so patients can receive care closer to home.
