Climate disturbances are becoming more severe and frequent, raising critical questions about how essential natural processes will continue to be affected. A new computer simulation is helping to answer these important questions by calculating the potential consequences of extreme weather events on ecosystems and the benefits they provide to humans. Peter Reich, Director of the U-M Institute for Global Change Biology and a collaborator on the model, highlights the potential of this research to predict both the economic losses and ecological impacts of extreme weather.
