What do billionaire George Soros, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Apple co-founder Michael Scott all have in common? All three have a mineral named after them. Minerals are often named after real people, a new U-M study finds, however, out of 6,000 mineral species, just 2.8 percent are named after women. Is it possible to achieve gender parity in this space? And what does this convention say about female representation in mineralogy and geology?
