Small-scale conservation efforts may inadvertently harm biodiversity rather than help it, according to new research by ecologists at U-M. The study finds that, compared to large, continuous landscapes, fragmented land tracts not only worsen biodiversity loss but also reduce the landscape’s capacity to store carbon. Study author Nate Sanders, U-M professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, discusses the findings in this Michigan News research spotlight.
