Researchers at Michigan Medicine have explored how children with tonsil stones may benefit from a procedure called adenotonsillectomy. In particular, they are examining underweight patients with sleep-disordered breathing who have struggled to thrive. These children often experience significant weight gain after undergoing the surgery. Erin Kirkham, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, a pediatric otolaryngologist at U-M’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and the study’s lead author, discusses the prevailing assumption that weight gain is a common outcome in children after adenotonsillectomy and highlights the impact of the surgical process on these patients.
