As society grows more reliant on space-based tech, it faces rising risks from extreme space weather like solar eruptions that can disrupt satellites and power grids. To improve early warnings, a University of Michigan-led team is developing SWIFT, a satellite system—including a solar sail-powered craft—to extend alert times from 40 to nearly 60 minutes.
