A national poll from the University of Michigan reveals that many parents of young children (ages 3-5) resort to threats, such as taking away toys or warning that Santa won’t come, to address misbehavior. Experts, including Dr. Susan Woolford, M.D., a pediatrician at Mott and co-director of the Mott Poll, emphasize the importance of consistent, age-appropriate discipline, positive reinforcement, and flexibility in shaping long-term behavior. Parents are advised to avoid harsh tactics like spanking and focus on strategies that foster their child’s healthy development.
