Researchers at the University of Michigan (U-M) have solved the “Dolomite Problem,” a long-standing mystery in geology regarding the mineral dolomite. While dolomite is abundant in rocks older than 100 million years, it is nearly absent in younger formations. Wenhao Sun, U-M professor of materials science and engineering and corresponding author of the study, hopes that understanding how dolomite forms in nature will offer insights into developing new strategies for promoting the crystal growth of modern technological materials.
