Hazards rarely occur in isolation—one disaster often triggers another. Fires can lead to mudslides, which may then cause flooding. These chain reactions are known as “cascading hazards,” where one event sets off a series of subsequent disasters. University of Michigan researchers are working to better understand and predict these linked events—and to strengthen the infrastructure and communities most at risk.
