Protecting the largest fresh surface water system on Earth is of utmost importance to Ph.D. candidate Etienne Herrick-Sutton, whose research focuses on the effectiveness of cover crops in the Great Lakes region. Cover crops, or crops planted between primary crops in rotations when farmers would otherwise leave the soil bare, have an important role in carbon sequestration.
