Forests store roughly 40 percent of the Earth’s soil carbon, helping to keep the carbon dioxide that trees inhale and use for photosynthesis from returning to the atmosphere. However, a new U-M experiment shows that global warming is causing more carbon to escape the soil than is being added by plants. Experiment lead Peter Reich comments on the implications of these findings for Michigan News.
