Trust Falls Among Michigan’s Local Officials That Residents Can Be Responsible Partners in Policymaking

The latest survey results from U-M’s Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP) show that Michigan’s local political leaders have extremely low levels of trust in residents to participate responsibly in the policymaking process, with views consistent across partisan affiliations and across all types of communities, from small to large and from rural to urban. According to Stephanie Leiser, executive director of CLOSUP, national partisan politics play a major role in explaining this distrust.
