Anti-poverty programs often emphasize cash transfers to help people meet their basic needs. While these initiatives are essential, they can overlook the psychological and cultural factors that influence how individuals take action in their lives. A new U-M study shows that culturally wise programs that promote values such as social harmony, respectfulness, and collective progress led to greater economic advancement for women in Niger compared with Western-style programs rooted in individual ambition.
