In the early 1940s, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor became a key research center for developing a vaccine to protect soldiers from influenza. Under the leadership of Thomas Francis Jr. and with the help of Jonas Salk, the team created and tested an inactivated vaccine through extensive trials. Their work led to important advances in vaccine development and shaped how influenza prevention is managed today.
