A new U-M study conducted in collaboration with Ford Motor Co. finds that the United States has the capacity to mine enough graphite to supply batteries for electric vehicles and other technologies, but geopolitical and economic challenges complicate the effort. Graphite is a critical material in EV production, and while domestic mining is possible, it would be far more costly than importing.
