Many Older Adults – Especially Gen X Women – Show Signs of Addiction To Ultra-Processed Foods

Generation X is more likely than any other age group to meet the criteria for addiction to ultra-processed foods, according to U-M’s National Poll on Healthy Aging. Now in their 50s and 60s, Gen Xers were the first generation raised on foods high in fat, salt, sugar, and flavoring, and have spent most of their lives in an environment dominated by them. In this IHPI Research Spotlight, study author Ashley Gearhardt, Ph.D., professor of psychology at U-M, highlights the findings and explains why women are more affected.
