Social Security is one of the most successful programs in American history, yet lifelong single, divorced, and prematurely widowed women receive lower benefits than their married peers. A new U-M study found that married older adults not only receive higher Social Security benefits but also have lower poverty rates, which leaves already vulnerable groups at greater risk of financial insecurity in old age.
