Phillips went from high school to professional baseball after being drafted by the New York Mets in the 1981 MLB Draft. His athletic career lasted until 1987 across different minor league teams under the Mets and the Detroit Tigers; he made progress on his U-M degree during the off-seasons. Phillips joined the Mets’ front office in 1990, eventually becoming the team’s general manager in 1997. His tenure saw the Mets make franchise-first back-to-back playoff appearances in 1999 and 2000. In the latter season, the Mets made it to the World Series, where they fell to the rival New York Yankees. After his time as Mets general manager ended in 2003, Phillips became an analyst for ESPN, TSN, MLB Network, and other outlets. He has also contributed color commentary to a number of titles in the MLB 2K video game series.
