Wildland-Urban Fires Trigger Biological Changes in Firefighters, May Explain Increased Cancer Risks

Wildland-urban interface zones, where undeveloped and developed lands converge, present unique risks to firefighters, according to a study led by the University of Michigan. The study highlights the dangers of exposure to a complex mix of chemicals from burning vegetation, vehicles, and infrastructure, often occurring without adequate respiratory protection. This exposure may contribute to higher rates of certain cancers and other health conditions. Jackie Goodrich, the study’s lead author and a U-M professor of public health, shared insights on the findings with Michigan News.
