Long before becoming one of the most famous voices in the world, James Earl Jones, ’55, HLHD’71, spoke little for close to a decade. At 5 years old, Jones was nearly separated from his family and left with unknown relatives in Mississippi. The resulting trauma of begging to move to Michigan with his grandparents and the fear he’d be abandoned had led Jones to develop a debilitating stutter. So, for much of his childhood, Jones kept silent, later claiming he “was practically mute.”

When Myra Beaudoin Bertrand, PhD’08, finally reached the top of the world, she fell to her knees. She’d been climbing for nearly three weeks — clipping and unclipping herself from fixed ropes, taking small steps in her heavy boots, and relying increasingly on oxygen tanks as the altitude made it harder and harder to breathe.
