A new analysis of data from a past space mission challenges previous views of an unusual planetary phenomenon, suggesting that rare conditions may have influenced the planet’s magnetic field. Xianzhe Jia, a University of Michigan professor and co-author of the study published in Nature Astronomy, noted the mystery has puzzled scientists since the Voyager 2 flyby. This new insight could impact future research into subsurface oceans on the planet’s moons, paving the way for further exploration.
