Americans across the nation may not know much about the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), but it’s a big deal in the eight states that border these inland seas. Three of these eight states are swing states, including Michigan, in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. For this reason, School for Environment & Sustainability professor Mike Shriberg predicts candidates for president will turn their focus to the GLRI very soon. Shriberg outlines the precedent for the region’s political battleground status being used to draw attention to Great Lakes restoration in a piece for The Conversation.
