College Education, Physical Activity Help Predict Who Will Transfer From Assisted Living to Nursing Homes

Roughly 15 percent of the 900,000 people who live in assisted living facilities in the U.S. could transfer to nursing homes. But what are the risks involved with this move? Who are those most likely to require a move into a nursing home? A new U-M study showed a connection between better physical performance and college education with a lower risk of transfer to a nursing home. Study principal investigator Janet Larson comments on the findings for the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation.
