Limited therapeutics were available to treat sepsis, a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. However, as of February 2024, a new treatment has been developed to treat sepsis in children. Last month, the FDA approved the use of a therapeutic device invented and developed at the University of Michigan for use in children with acute kidney injury and sepsis or a septic condition requiring continuous kidney replacement (dialysis with artificial kidney) therapy in the intensive care unit.
