U-M Institute for Social Research professor of research, sociology, and public policy & Detroit Metropolitan Area Communities Study (DMACS) faculty research lead Jeffrey Morenoff discusses police brutality and high crime rates in relation to Detroiters’ attitudes towards police. A recent survey finds that Detroit residents want significant police reform as they view police killings of Black and Latinx people are part of a “broader pattern of mistreatment of people of color by the police.” Morenoff highlights that Detroiters want police to undergo training in nonviolent police methods, using unarmed first responders for mental health calls, and giving greater power to the civilian oversight board regarding investigation and disciplinary aspects.
