Before 1915, railway lanterns broke when warm glass hit cold air, causing accidents. Glass pans shattered in the oven. Then, Sullivan developed Nonex for industrial use and Pyrex for household use while he was director of research at Corning Glass Works. The result—improved railway safety and shorter cooking times.
