When a tornado struck Rochester, Minnesota, where Mayo was practicing, he and his brother labored to save the injured at a makeshift hospital. A local nun who assisted during the crisis encouraged the Mayo brothers to open a hospital—and so started the world-renowned Mayo Clinic.
