Sick Americans are spending increasingly long periods, from hours to days, waiting for a hospital bed. This issue had been growing even before 2020 and was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. A new U-M study on the “boarding” of patients in emergency departments shows that wait times now far exceed national hospital standards, highlighting the urgent need for increased resources in emergency care across the country.
