Why is Space Force investing $35 million in a University of Michigan project? Led by U-M aerospace engineering associate professor Benjamin Jorns, the groundbreaking effort aims to develop a spacecraft capable of “maneuvering without regret.” This ambitious project combines two types of spacecraft engines: fast chemical rockets and efficient electric engines powered by small nuclear reactors. By merging these technologies, the team plans to make space travel faster, more flexible, and better suited for critical defense and space exploration missions.
