New research from the University of Michigan reveals how Bacteroides bacteria break down carbohydrates and produce short-chain fatty acids that benefit gut health. Led by Nicole Koropatkin, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, the study identifies a unique enzyme involved in lipoprotein production, which could aid in developing targeted antibiotics, as Bacteroides can act as pathogens outside the gut.
