Meet Jacqueline (Jackie) Vansant:
I grew up in Rehoboth, Delaware and in a variety of towns on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Although I spent much time in and on the water and went on occasional sailing trips with my grandparents, I have never been on a ship in the Atlantic Ocean, let alone ever far enough from shore as not to be able to see it. So, I am very excited about this trip! And, the ports of call all sound exciting. Having flown to Europe often since my junior year in Salzburg in 1974-75, I have long wanted to traverse the waters by ship. Because of my most recent research on Jewish-Austrian refugees, I have read many accounts of journeys across the Atlantic and the new arrivals’ impressions entering the harbor in Montreal or New York. As a cinephile and researcher on the image of Austria in Hollywood films, those films with ocean crossings are particularly fascinating. I look forward to sharing the stories of the ship voyages of those fleeing Europe.
