Explore Bavaria on this captivating, seven-night journey through alpine splendor. Stay in a chalet-style hotel, ride a gondola up Mount Nebelhorn and travel through the Walser valley into Austria’s Breitach Gorge. Enjoy the exquisite scenery of Lake Constance as you cruise to Lindau island and its colorful old town.

Journey to the hilltop Neuschwanstein Castle and the Abbey of St. Gall. Learn about cherished customs and local life during visits to craft workshops, a farmers’ cooperative market, a family farm and a dairy in Appenzell, Switzerland. Finally, indulge your senses at a traditional Bavarian celebration on a Swiss mountaintop, complete with beer, music, and fondue.

Exclusive departure: This departure is considered exclusive. The participants are U-M travelers, consisting of alumni, family, and friends.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Depart gateway city

AHI FlexAir passengers depart for Munich, Germany. Please check your luggage from your gateway city to your arrival city. Your claim checks should have the following airport code: MUC.

Day 2 – Munich, Germany | Oberstaufen

Arrive at Munich Airport. Proceed through immigration to the baggage claim area and retrieve your luggage. After completing customs, AHI FlexAir passengers traveling on flights that qualify for the group arrival transfer and Land Program passengers who have purchased seats on the group transfer should exit the baggage claim area and proceed to the Arrivals Hall, where an AHI Travel representative will meet you.

Transfer to Lindner Parkhotel & Spa. Please note, if you arrive before check-in time, your room may not be immediately available.

After settling into your hotel, join your Travel Director and other travelers for an orientation walk around Oberstaufen.

Get to know your fellow travelers at a Welcome Reception and Dinner.

Day 3 – Hindelang | Rettenberg

Enjoy a buffet breakfast at your hotel each morning.

Enrichment: The Allgäu and the Alps. Stretching from the Danube to the Alps, the Allgäu region in Southern Germany is beloved by locals and vacationers alike. Learn what makes the Allgäu region so special during an enlightening morning discussion.

Discovery: Traditions and Handicrafts in the Alps. Witness the pride of local craftspeople as you chat with them about their handmade items inside their workshops and learn how they create them. Browse handmade items including dirndl and lederhosen, then continue to Hindelang and enjoy a bustling farmers’ cooperative and learn how area families participate in this community-oriented, small-town market. Later, at a nearby family farm, understand more about the region’s farming practices. Finish with a lunch of German fare at a long-established Rettenberg brewery and sample the beer with a toast of Prost! (Moderate)

Day 4 – Appenzell | St. Gallen

Discovery: Appenzell and St. Gallen. This morning, cross the border to experience cheery Appenzell, an unmistakably Swiss village beloved for its rolling hills and rural customs including the ceremonial descent of the cattle in autumn. Appenzell is the headquarters for yodeling and is also known for its delicious pear bread, cheeses and chocolates. Take time to admire Appenzell’s lovely fresco-painted houses in the town’s car-free center. (Moderate)

A rustic mountaintop hut sets the scene for today’s quintessential lunch of bubbling cheese fondue. Savor this decadent Swiss meal with fellow travelers as you feast your eyes on a perfectly paired side dish: stunning Appenzeller views.

Make your way to the Swiss village of St. Gallen, where you’ll find a sanctuary for the soul. At the entrance of the Abbey Library, a sign in Greek translates to “soul pharmacy.” Your insider tour reveals 12 centuries of precious handwritten, lavishly illustrated manuscripts as well as coins, medals and fossils, surrounded by undulating balconies under gorgeous ceiling frescoes. Continue on to the light and airy Abbey cathedral, built around 1755 in late baroque style. (Moderate)

Day 5 – Linderhof Palace | Ettal Abbey

Discovery: Neuschwanstein, Linderhof Palace and Ettal Abbey. Have your camera on hand as you witness Neuschwanstein, King Ludwig II’s spectacular castle perched high on a rugged hilltop against a backdrop of mountain scenery. Continue to Linderhof Palace, also built by King Ludwig II, for an inside look at the palace’s opulent rooms and manicured gardens inspired by Versailles. Next, stroll the castle-like grounds of Ettal Abbey, a 14th-century Benedictine monastery considered a masterpiece of Bavarian architecture. (Moderate)

Free Time: Following the royal excursion, return to the Lindner Parkhotel and enjoy the evening in and around your chalet-style retreat.

Day 6 – Friedrichshafen | Lake Constance | Lindau

Enrichment: The History of Lake Constance. Also known as Bodensee, majestic Lake Constance is a glacier basin that forms part of the Rhine River confluence. Its beautiful, curving shoreline is a storied playground shared by three nations — Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This morning, learn about the inland sea’s important place in history.

Discovery: Lake Constance. Enjoy the mountain scenery as you make your way to Friedrichshafen, home of the fascinating Zeppelin Museum. Inside, learn about the airships which first took flight in 1900. Afterward, feel the sun and crisp air on your face as you cruise across the lake for lunch and a walking tour in cozy Lindau. See the storybook spires of Diebsturm, also known as Thieves Tower; the intricately painted Old Town Hall; and the stately baroque Haus zum Cavazzen in the Market Square. (Moderate)

Enjoy lunch in picture-perfect Lindau Harbor under the watchful eye of the Bavarian lion statue and the medieval lighthouse, with the crystalline lake and stunning Alps as your dramatic backdrop.

Free Time: Roam Lindau’s lovely little passageways or browse the pretty town’s unique shops before your return trip to your hotel.

Day 7 – Upper Allgäu | Breitach Gorge

Enrichment: Who are the Bavarians? The citizens of the Free State of Bavaria are proud of their land and culture, a way of life that includes its own dialect, cuisine, architecture and festivals. From Oktoberfest to an Alpine spirit, learn what makes Bavarians tick.

Discovery: Panoramic Alps and Breitach Gorge. Feel the soul-stirring magnetism of Alpine splendor today as you discover Bavaria’s upper Allgäu region on your scenic drive to Mount Nebelhorn. Ascend in a gondola to savor the magnificent views, then travel through the Walser valley into Austria to Breitach Gorge, one of central Europe’s deepest gorges. Contemplate the beauty of nature as you walk along narrow footpaths and bridges amid the rushing sounds of the Breitach River. (Moderate)

Free Time: After an invigorating morning in nature, return to Oberstaufen for an independent lunch and an afternoon of leisure or independent exploration.

Discovery: Bavarian Evening. Tonight, let the warm glow of torches lure you to an alpine hut on a nearby hill. Celebrate Bavarian culture like a local as you enjoy local specialties, toast with fresh German beer and listen to live music in this timeless retreat in the alpine foothills. (Moderate)

Day 8 – Oberstaufen

Free Time: Make the most of your last day in Bavaria. Relax in the wooden sauna, a ritual that Germans believe is vital to good health. Take a refreshing swim in the hotel pool, commune with nature during a leisurely stroll in a meadow or set out on an invigorating mountain hike. Sample a range of smooth, decadent chocolates or raise a frothy stein of beer with friends.

Tonight, join your fellow travelers for a fun-filled Farewell Reception and Dinner rooted in Bavarian traditions.

Day 9 – Depart for gateway city

After breakfast, bid farewell to Bavaria. AHI FlexAir passengers traveling on flights that qualify for a group transfer and Land Program passengers who have purchased seats on the group transfer depart for Munich Airport for your return flights home. Your Travel Director will provide the details.
