In 1981, five men were diagnosed with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. By the end of the year, one hundred and twenty men died due to their immune deficiency. HIV/AIDS is still far away from a cure. Ideally, our society would utilize the lessons learned from the HIV epidemic and applied them to understand SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19.
