Patients with obesity expect to get the same level of evidence-based care as patients with other chronic health conditions, but recent studies have shown this might not be the case. Experts from Michigan Medicine explore the potential reasons for the sub-par level of care, including societal stigma against people with obesity and a lack of training among primary care physicians. Lauren Oshman, M.D., M.PH., and Dina Hafez Griauzde, M.D., M.Sc., members of the U-M Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, share insights on the insurance issues related to obesity care and suggest potential ways to redesign obesity care and educate physicians on prescribing obesity medication.
