If cirrhosis is left untreated, the disease can cause other conditions such as type 1 hepatorenal syndrome, or HRS-1. It typically occurs in patients who have severe liver damage caused by cirrhosis. The drug, terlipressin, increases blood pressure in patients through its ability to constrict blood vessels that lead to the GI tract, liver, spleen and pancreas.
