Bogdan Popa and Alex Shorter, U-M mechanical engineering assistant professors, discuss their research regarding how dolphins use biological sonar (biosonar) to identify underwater objects and create a map of their environment. This research will aid in the development of acoustic imaging technology, including ultrasound diagnostics in health care and sensing for autonomous vehicles. The faculty experts further explain their research and future applications with this technology.
