Areas like machine vision, armor, and chemical and biological sensing may now benefit from a newly discovered pinwheel structure, self-assembled from pyramid-shaped nanoparticles. Collaborative research between the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of Michigan revealed that the structure contains a key quality that may enable unique material properties that could be useful in designing nano-engineered materials. Faculty members from the College of Engineering explore their research and findings.
