The processes behind how and when puberty starts are still not certain. Early puberty has been found to be linked to childhood obesity. Research shows that leptin, a hormone produced by fat cells, may be the cause. Carol Elias, PhD, professor at Michigan Medicine, talks about her own research on the effects of metabolic signals in pubertal onset and fertility.
