Physician burnout is on the rise, defined as long-term, unresolvable job-related stress that leads to exhaustion, cynicism, and feelings of detachment. Sam Schotland, M.A., a second-year medical student at the University of Michigan Medical School and Ph.D. student studying the history of science and medicine at Yale University, shares insights from his recent article on the topic. Schotland and his colleagues explore three historical barriers to physician wellbeing and structural solutions to those barriers.
