When you think of termites, you immediately think of what a nuisance they could be when dealing with an infestation, but they provide a critical role in ecosystems. In conjunction with the University of Miami, University of Michigan biologist Aimée Classen and a group of researchers learned that termites are pivotal when breaking down wood, contributing to Earth’s carbon cycle in an international study. The study also suggests that with warming climates, termites may be on the move.
