Millions of Americas who suffer from hearing loss may soon find it more convenient to find relief. Last month, the Food and Drug Administration announced that hearing aids will soon be available for purchase over the counter for adults with “mild to moderate hearing loss. Currently, to determine if a hearing aid will improve a patient’s communication, one’s only option would be to consult with an audiologist. Devin McCaslin, Ph.D., director of audiology at Michigan Medicine, discusses the improvements to be seen with regulation changes and the importance of consulting a hearing specialist.
