Despite the epidemic raging nationwide, opioids remain the primary fixture in pain treatment. Opioids are commonly prescribed to patients discharged after a total knee and hip arthroplasty, but can they be given in smaller doses to eliminate the chance of one becoming addicted? Elizabeth Dailey, M.D., Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, discusses coming up with a program that would decrease the dosage of opioids given to patients and refills for doctors.
