Pulse Oximeters Are Less Accurate in Hospitalized Black Patients

A pulse oximeter is an essential tool in estimating a patient’s oxygen levels, helping to guide critical medical decisions, such as whether a patient needs admission to the hospital or receives supplemental oxygen. Considering its wide usage medically, it is paramount that these devices work equitably. A study from the University of Michigan concludes that prescription pulse oximeters missed low blood oxygen levels at a statistically significant higher frequency in hospitalized Black patients.
