The Make It Home program by the University of Michigan, designed to help tenants who rent in the city of Detroit become homeowners, reported that those assisted have sustained homeownership for four years. Roshanak Mehdipanah, associate professor of health behavior and health education at U-M’s School of Public Health, says the study underscored the importance of affordability and the house’s physical condition to enhance stability for those with low income. Since its start in 2017, the Make It Home program has helped nearly 1,200 households obtain ownership of their home and ultimately avoid home loss.
