Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure in the United States. However, trying to determine type 1 or type 2 diabetes patients at high risk for progressive kidney disease is difficult. Assessing kidney function is typically done by looking at estimated glomerular filtration rate and urine albumin excretion. Both tests do not have strong predictive power in early stage diabetes.
