Can bariatric surgery put you at higher risk for an opioid overdose? According to an algorithm determined by Michigan’s prescription drug monitoring system, one-third of patients who had bariatric surgery at U-M Health had a high risk of overdosing from prescription drugs. Oliver Varban, M.D., the co-director of the adult bariatric surgery program at U-M Health, talks about the algorithm and his team’s efforts to reduce the number of opioids prescribed.
