Open Source Platform Enables Research on Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning

Mosharaf Chowdhury, associate professor of computer science and engineering at U-M, and Fan Lai, a doctoral student, discuss the development of a machine learning technique designed with data privacy in mind. The approach is called federated learning and trains learning models on end-user devices, like smartphones and laptops, rather than requiring the transfer of private data to central servers. Chowdhury and Lai note that it helps mitigate privacy risks and high communication and storage costs associated with uploading to the cloud.
