A team of scientists including a University of Michigan aquatic ecologist is forecasting a summer “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico that will be smaller than the average size of the zone over its previous 36 years of being measured. The 2023 Gulf of Mexico hypoxemia forecast was recently released, and it showed that the dead zone is just 1,200 square miles smaller than the average.
