New Study Shows Social Media Content Opens New Frontiers for Sustainability Science Researchers

User-generated data is becoming fruitful ground for data scientists interested in attitudes and trends within the environment and sustainability space. However, there are also challenges that scientists are experiencing with this new ‘social media data science’. According to Derek Van Berkel, Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability, social media websites such as Reddit and Facebook, are home to viewpoints and ideas, although at times can contain misrepresented information and fact gaps. Regardless of these intricacies, research continues to show that social media can help achieve the 2015 UN Sustainable Development Goals, which help eradicate poverty and guarantees peace and prosperity for 2030.
