Though the birth of a child is beautiful, it comes with its own set of challenges, particularly for women. Maternal mortality rates are higher in the United States than in any other industrialized country, suggests Lindsay Admon, M.D., MSc, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Michigan Medical School and obstetrician-gynecologist at the University of Michigan Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital. A new study found that hospital-based maternal deaths occur earlier in pregnancy or postpartum, while maternal deaths occurring at the time of delivery are declining in the U.S.
